Starting yesterday, the council woman for our district, Valerie Ervin, started a week long challenge to raise awareness to poverty in our area. Over 12% of people in our area are living below the poverty line, which means that these people can not meet basic needs such as paying for meals.
This week, the councilwoman proposed that particiapants spend only $5 a day on food, which is slightly more than the amount that people on food stamps receive. This is part of SNAP, - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which serves 22 million families, 27,000 of which are in Montgomery County.
MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr is taking part in the challenge as well. The SNAP challenge has gained a lot of publicity, appearing on the front page of the metro section as well as on local TV stations.
This is a clip of Councilwoman Valerie Ervin and Superintendent Starr shopping at a Rockville Giant, attempting to spend only $5 per day.
